So... it's costume season for me. This year we (my barn) were able to negotiate a slot into the Christmas Parade! Whoo! It's a small town thing, we will be walking for about a block--or four--and that's about it. Why is it so exciting? For years they told us no because we had so many requirements. Sucky, but if you want safety they may as well listen to us when we say our horses are not used to having a sire-spewing firetruck five feet behind them. Then they want us to make them wear dipers. Uh-huh... But two years ago I was watching TV where the local channel showed this very parade and guess what... NO DIPERS. NO WHERE NEAR SIRENS. (gasp!) So we point all of this out and now we get to join in again.
We'll have our Norwegian Fjord lesson horse out with viking gear. I'll be riding the Friesian with a medieval fantasy setting (I couldn't afford more relative fabrics, and those just aren't shiny enough for a night-time low-light parade anyway). I also ended up purchasing a costume for myself since well... I have about a week to do all of this in between college and Thanksgiving family visitations. Oh well. It's only for ten minutes tops anyhow. Which brings me to the subject of this little entry. Stupid Measurements.
A friend sent me a video on Youtube where someone talks about the human nature in every-day items (a conversation between Barbie and Bratz) and my favorite so far,
STUPID MEASURING! In this video she explains how instead of actually breaking out the measuring tape we use our bodies and realtive sight to figure if something will fit someplace else. That's pretty much what I'm doing with a horse twice my size. Only I wasn't being lazy, I just didn't have the tools. Instead of using a measuring tape, or my body, I used haystring... and now that I've made the cuts I think 2 yards is frightening long. I guess I should poke the horse with pins...
Oh and anyone with a quick way to make some solid Fleur De Leis ornaments I would greatly appreciate some tips! They can't be too heavy as one of these will be on the horse's forehead, and he's a dimwit. But they can't be so light to let the wind twist them about.

They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages."
